how to adapt the practice and business of journalism to the Web

Incorporate YouTube footage into your own videos

Q: How do I incorporate user-generated content?

One answer (of many possible answers) in three seven easy steps:

  1. Visit YouTube, Revver or other video-hosting site and search for a video relevant to your needs; snow in Albuquerque, for example, if I was working on a scintillating weather story;
  2. Assuming the video is not stolen or copyrighted, get permission to use it from its producer;
  3. Use Zamzar or Vixy.net, to convert the footage into an editable format;
  4. Pull the footage into your favorite video editor and credit who captured it;
  5. Enhance the footage by adding the results of your journalistic work to it;
  6. Output your video to your site’s usual player and post it to YouTube or whatever site you’ve used;
  7. Let your collaborator know that the new work is up and open for mixing, if he or she wants to try out Zamzar or Vixy.net.
